Haven’t We Spent Enough on Ukraine Already?
“Courage does not always roar. Valor does not always shine.”
Ukraine Aid: Former VP Mike Pence Slams Fellow Conservatives Opposing Support
In a bold move to rally his fellow conservatives, former Vice President Mike Pence is pushing back against those within the Grand Old Party opposing ongoing US backing of Ukraine in their struggle against Russian aggression. The crux of Pence's argument? It all boils down to countering Chinese influence.
As revealed in a memo issued by Pence's non-profit organization, Advancing American Freedoms, China is actively aiding Russia in its brutal assault on Ukraine. By defeating Moscow, Pence asserts, we're simultaneously curbing Beijing's imperialistic aspirations. He warns that if Kiev were to fall under Kremlin control, China would reap significant benefits in terms of energy resources, thereby amplifying its already alarming territorial ambitions.
This stark reality hasn't swayed several key figures among Senate Republicans such as Senators Lindsay Graham and Mitch McConnell, staunch supporters of Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelinskyi—some having made trips to show solidarity with Ukrainians. However, dissent remains strong among House Republicans citing fiscal worries and national priorities as grounds to reevaluate assistance commitments.
Divisions within the party ranks risk derailing vital foreign policy objectives, especially ahead of midterm elections later this year. As noted by Pence himself:
"The Biden-Harris administration has failed America at home and abroad, so it is small wonder there are skeptics of continuing aid to Ukraine... But the simple fact is America will be less secure if Ukraine falls."
