Buckeye State Cracks Down: Marijuana Businesses Face Fines Over Advertising Shenanigans
In a bold move to uphold accountability, Ohio's regulatory body has slapped five cannabis companies with whopping fines totaling $212,000 over brazen breaches of advertising regulations. The crackdown comes hot on the heels of August 6th's historic launch of recreational pot sales across the Buckeye State.
As revealed by local reports, most infractions occurred during promotional blitzes leading up to the landmark date. Transgressors included errant signage – think oversized displays sans approval – as well as some rather creative marketing ploys.
Leading the pack in terms of penalties, Greenleaf Apothecaries faces a staggering $150,000 tab for their indiscretions. According to officials, these missteps entailed peddling grub and refreshments via an ice cream van, touting "Free Ice Cream" on various digital platforms, and erecting unauthorized signage at one of its locations spread throughout Akron, Canton, Cleveland, Columbus, and Wickliffe.
When questioned about these alleged transgressions, a spokesperson for Greenleaf Apothecaries offered conciliatory tones: "[We] take[s] the rules seriously and hope[ ]to reach a resolution with the state."
Meanwhile, authorities have also taken issue with another eyebrow-raising ad campaign featuring the catchy yet cringe-worthy phrase "Can you take me higher?" It seems even cheeky wordplay won't fly under the watchful eyes of Ohio's Division of Cannabis Control.
