Sex Ed in Florida is “On Hold”
It's been nearly a year since Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) submitted its reproductive health plans to the Florida Department of Education for approval, as required by a new state law that has heightened scrutiny on how public schools deal with sexuality and gender identity. Yet, the state remains mum, leaving OCPS and other school districts in limbo.
The controversy began when OCPS attempted to shoehorn last year's canceled sex education classes into the start of the new school year. However, without the state's approval, these plans have been put on hold indefinitely. Superintendent Maria Vazquez had initially expected a response from the state by late July, but it seems that timeline was overly optimistic.
In an email, OCPS spokesperson Renee Burke stated, "Once OCPS knows what is expected and what is approved, it will plan and deliver accordingly." However, with no word from the state, the district remains in a holding pattern.
Florida law requires schools to teach reproductive health lessons in grades 6-12 that emphasize the "benefits of sexual abstinence as the expected standard and the consequences of teenage pregnancy." However, districts have been wanting to push the envelope, discussing such things as gender roles, transgenderism, and more.
