Same-Sex Flamingo Couple Are Making History at UK Zoo

Same-Sex Flamingo Couple Makes History at Paignton Zoo

In a heartwarming development from Paignton Zoo in Devon, a same-sex flamingo couple has achieved a remarkable milestone. Curtis and Arthur, two male Chilean flamingos, have become the zoo’s first same-sex pair to “successfully hatch and raise a chick together,” as announced by the organization on social media.

The circumstances surrounding the couple's new addition remain somewhat of a mystery. According to bird curator Pete Smallbones, zoo staff “aren’t entirely sure” how Curtis and Arthur came to possess their egg. However, he suggests that the “most likely scenario is that the egg was abandoned by another couple” before being “adopted” by the flamingo dads.

The news of Curtis and Arthur hatching an egg and “are now rearing” the chick was not unexpected for those in the zoo’s “bird department,” Smallbones noted in a recent interview with the Guardian.

Same-sex parenting is not a rarity in the avian world, with numerous instances documented over the years. Flamingos and penguins, in particular, have made headlines for their unconventional family structures. In the early 2000s, two male flamingos named Carlos and Fernando at the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust in Gloucestershire were known for “stealing eggs from other flamingos to raise as their own.” Their dedication was so impressive that they “did such a great job at protecting and hatching eggs” that staff ultimately “gave them an egg that had been left abandoned in a nest.”
