Look at Turkey Trying to Achieve Peace!

"Make it a rule of life never to regret and never to look back. Regret is an appalling waste of energy; you can't build on it; it's only good for wallowing in."

Turkey Hosts Diplomatic Talks Amidst Ethiopia-Somalia Tensions Over Somaliland Deal

In a significant diplomatic endeavor, Turkey has once again stepped into the role of mediator by hosting a second round of discussions. The core of the dispute revolves around Ethiopia's recent agreement with the self-declared independent region of Somaliland, which has been a point of contention since its announcement in January.

The agreement in question would allow Ethiopia, the world's most populous landlocked nation with over 120 million residents, to lease a 20-kilometer stretch of Somaliland's coastline to establish a marine force base. In exchange, Ethiopia would formally recognize Somaliland's independence, a move that Somalia vehemently opposes, citing threats to its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Turkish capital of Ankara served as the venue for these critical talks, where Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan engaged in separate discussions with his counterparts from Ethiopia and Somalia, Taye Atske Selassie and Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, respectively.

In a bid to find a middle ground, Minister Fidan previously suggested a compromise that would allow Ethiopia access to the sea via Somali territory in return for Ethiopia's recognition of Somalia's sovereignty and territorial integrity. This proposal underscores Turkey's strategic role and vested interest in fostering stability in the region.

Adding to the diplomatic efforts, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan engaged in separate telephone conversations with the leaders of Somalia and Ethiopia on Sunday. President Erdogan's calls were part of a broader initiative to encourage a peaceful resolution to the dispute, reflecting Turkey's growing influence and interest in African affairs.
