Steve Martin Turns SNL Down to Become Tim Walz

In a surprising twist to the usual "Saturday Night Live" casting rumors, Steve Martin has decisively declined the opportunity to impersonate Governor Tim Walz, Kamala Harris' newly announced running mate. Despite a flurry of fan speculation and a direct request from "SNL" producer Lorne Michaels, Martin remains firm in his decision, citing a mismatch in his comedic style.

"I wanted to say no and, by the way, he wanted me to say no," Martin revealed in a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times. His reluctance stems from a self-awareness about his comedic capabilities. "Lorne, I’m not an impressionist. You need someone who can really nail the guy," he explained, underscoring the need for a more adept impersonator to take on the portrayal of Gov. Walz.

The commitment required for such a role on "SNL" also does not align with Martin's current professional and personal agenda. "It’s ongoing. It’s not like you do it once and get applause and never do it again," he commented, highlighting the recurring nature of the commitment that the show would require.

Martin's humility shone through as he expressed doubts about his suitability for the role. "Again, they need a real impressionist to do that. They’re going to find somebody really, really good. I’d be struggling," he admitted, setting the stage for "SNL" to potentially scout new talent for this political impersonation.
